Party Mykonos runs on a timetable, and almost everybody who arrives for the first time gets it wrong by about four hours. The beach clubs peak in the afternoon. The town fills at ten. The clubs on the south coast do not get going until two in the morning and they are still going at seven. Turn up at a beach club at six expecting the peak and you have missed it by three hours.

Here is the actual schedule, the venues that matter, and the practical things nobody tells you until you have wasted an evening.

The daily timetable a party Mykonos night actually follows

Midday to six. The south coast. Psarou, Platis Gialos, Paradise, Super Paradise and Paraga fill from around noon and the music starts long before you expect it. Sunbeds at the well-known clubs are reserved days ahead in August and the good ones are not cheap. Nammos on Psarou has been the island’s most photographed venue for two decades and it sets the tone for that whole bay.

Six to nine. The sunset shift, which moves to Little Venice in Chora and to the windmills above it. This is the most crowded hour of the day in the old town and the drinks are priced accordingly. Sunset itself moves through the season, around nine in June and July and closer to eight by late August, so check before you book a table around it.

Nine to one. Dinner and the town. Matogianni and the lanes around it, restaurants full by seven in August, and a genuine reservation problem if you have not booked. Late tables are easier than early ones.

One until whenever. Cavo Paradiso above Paradise beach, and the clubs in town. Nothing meaningful happens before two. The island is still awake at six in the morning and the drive home at that hour is the easiest one of the day.

Which beach suits which kind of day

The south-west corner is the expensive, polished end. Psarou and Platis Gialos, with Ornos next door and quieter than both. This is where most of the island’s high-end villas and hotels sit and where most visitors who want a comfortable afternoon end up.

Paradise and Super Paradise are the loud ones, and Super Paradise is best reached by boat from the Platis Gialos jetty rather than by road, because parking there in August is genuinely difficult. The last boat back is earlier than most people assume. Check it before you rely on it.

Ftelia and Agios Sostis on the north coast are where people go when they have had enough of being looked at. No music, no bottle service, considerably more wind. Elia and Agrari are further east and quieter than the Paradise pair.

One warning about the north. The meltemi blows hardest in July and August, and when it does it strips those beaches entirely and stops the small boats along the south coast as well.

Private party Mykonos: villas and boats

A large share of what people mean by a party in Mykonos never happens in a venue at all. Villas in the hills above Ornos and Psarou, boats out of the old port and Tourlos, and day charters that leave in the morning and come back at seven.

Villa evenings are the simplest to arrange and the easiest to get wrong logistically. Villa names repeat, are often invented by the rental listing and are almost never signposted, so anyone coming to you needs a dropped map pin and the gate code rather than a name. If there is a guard, say so, because a guard nobody warned will turn a car away at the bottom of the drive.

Boats are the version with the most moving parts. Where the yacht is matters enormously: a berth in the marina, a place on the old port waterfront, or at anchor off a beach are three completely different arrangements. At anchor means somebody has to tender out, and that changes the timing for everyone involved. Charter days also drift. If the captain decides to move on to Rhenia at two in the afternoon, that needs saying before the boat leaves, not at four.

If your party involves companions, our party Mykonos bookings are arranged the same way as everything else: area, date, window, duration, agreed in advance and quoted with the travel already inside the figure.

Getting around, which is the real problem

Mykonos is 85 square kilometres and it does not feel small in August. Chora has no vehicle access at all, so every arrival there is a five to ten minute walk from Fabrika or the ring road. Everyone does it, all summer, at every hour.

There are only a few dozen licensed taxis for the entire island. The rank at Fabrika Square is picked clean by ten in the evening and between two and four in the morning the wait runs past an hour. Buses run from Fabrika and the old port to the main beaches and stop earlier than you want them to. Quad bikes are everywhere and are also how most visitors injure themselves; the hospital sees a great many of them in August.

The evening road down from town is at its worst between seven and eleven, which is exactly when everybody wants to move. Plan around it or plan to sit in it.

When to come

Between the fifth and the twenty-fifth of August the island runs at absolute capacity. Every villa let, every table reserved, every road full. It is the loudest three weeks in the Mediterranean and it is also the least pleasant if you dislike queuing.

For a party in Mykonos, June and September are the better months and hardly anyone says so. The sea is warm from late June, the clubs are open, the roads move, and a table on the night is possible rather than a fantasy. September in particular is the balance point: still fully alive, much less crowded, warmer water than June.

May and October are the edges. Things open around the third week of May and close through the middle of October, after which the island shuts almost completely and the resident population drops to a small fraction of the summer one.

Practical things that save an evening

Draw cash during the day. Every party Mykonos night runs on it. Chora machines have queues by nine in high season and a good number of them are empty by midnight.

Book restaurants ahead, or eat late deliberately. Both work. Turning up at nine in August without a reservation does not.

Wear shoes you can walk in. The old town is cobbled, uneven and dark in places, and every summer somebody discovers this the hard way at three in the morning.

Give your area rather than an address when you arrange anything. “A villa above Ornos” tells a driver everything he needs. A villa name tells him nothing.

And ask early. In June that buys you a choice. In the middle of August it buys you the difference between a choice and whatever is left.
